What is CEREC?

CEREC is a revolutionary system that enables us to design, fabricate and fit a new crown, veneer, onlay or inlay in a single visit, a procedure that would normally take at least two weeks or more!

Pressed ceramic (porcelain) is one of the best materials dentists can use to restore teeth.

Advantages of ceramic:

  1. Strong and durable.
  2. Highly aesthetic.
  3. Mimics the properties of natural tooth structure. Unlike amalgam that expands and contracts more than tooth when drinking hot and cold drinks (causing micro fractures in teeth), ceramic contracts and expands at very much the same rate as tooth structure.
  4. Forms a strong micro-mechanical bond to the tooth.
  5. Preserves healthy tooth structure.

Cerec Restorative Dentistry

A disadvantage until recently has been that to restore a tooth with ceramic at least two visits to the dentist were required. For the first appointment, an injection with local anaesthetic is necessary. An impression is then taken of the tooth (or teeth), the tooth is prepared and then a second impression is taken. A third impression is taken of the opposing teeth, and the first impression is used to make a temporary restoration. The impressions are then sent off to the laboratory, where a dental technician builds the ceramic on a model of the prepared tooth. This will take the technician about 2 weeks. When the ceramic returns from the laboratory, a second appointment is need, with another injection to numb the tooth, take the temporary restoration off, and to try the ceramic in. Occasionally, it might even be necessary to send the ceramic back to adjust the shade (colour) or the fit.

With CEREC, the same ceramic can now be used to restore a tooth in a single visit:
